Calling all dachshund fans — Microsite for Dachshund Walks in London

Dachshund Walks (or Sausage Walks) is an event organized on Instagram or MeetUp. Every 3–4 months dachshund dog owners in London take their pups for a mass walk. The first walk was in September 2017 and the event quickly went viral. In 2018 over 1,000 Dachshunds got together at London’s Greenwich Park.

CHALLENGE

This project was a four-day challenge of the Ironhack Berlin UX/UI Design Bootcamp. The task was to design a responsive website for an existing event with focus on design and animations.

RESEARCH

I’ve started from defining who my user is - who is a dachshund owner? To understand this, I had to understand what makes a dachshund an exceptional dog.

Nothing will turn a man’s home into a castle more quickly and effectively than a dachshund. — Queen Victoria

Dachshunds are special. For some they are funny “sausage”, for others sophisticated and elegant dogs. Used for hunting, then as a source of inspiration for a huge number of artist and celebrities, one thing is certain— they are unique dogs with special personality.

Choosing a dachshund as a dog is rarely accidental. People choosing such a dog are lovers of his clever and stubborn character and unique appearance (looong body and four small paws).

I also send out a survey and analyzed similar websites to find out what information are the most important on this kind of website. The most important is the place and time of the event, but also information about organisers and instruction how to participate.

CONCEPT

Brand Attributes

The walk takes place in London and it’s for dachshunds and their owners. My goal was to create a brand that has city style, is elegant and funny at the same time.

I was inspired by dachshund colors and shape, English autumn fashion, park vibe and British posters from the 1930s.

Moodboard

I’ve created logo and visual language for the microsite of this event. I used the font (Spinnaker) that reminds me of those from the 30s and played with the letter H, which refers to the shape of a dachshund.

To present the most important information, I use headers with letter H:

WHERE (place)

WHEN (time)

WHO (organisers)

HOW (how to participate)

As an example for this project I showed colour palette for Early Spring Walk. Colours change depending on the occasion of the event.

Different colour palettes for Early Spring Walk, Christmas Walk, October Walk and Night Walk.

PROTOTYPE

Below the final prototypes for mobile and desktop I created using Sketch and Principle.

There are animations on the desktop version that show up when we scroll the page. The mobile version has static headers with the letter H stretched.

SUMMARY

At the beginning it was a difficult project for me, I had only 4 days for it and from the very beginning I had no inspiration and idea how to present this event. The idea came on the third day in the evening and I had very little time to work on it, but in the end I’m very happy with the result. I’m amazed about what can be done in such a short time. During this project I have been working mainly in Principle and learned A LOT new things. My next steps (if I had more time) would be improving illustrations and make animations smoother.
